Our social life is undergoing unprecedented changes in the wake of the rapid scientific and technological progress observed in recent years. When looking at the current situation in global perspectives, we may see that the scientific and technological advances are making our environment more convenient and are contributing to improve our life through significant advances in medicine and medical technology. On the other hand, they are also creating new social problems, such as, for example, the destruction of the natural environment, the emergence of new sicknesses and the spread of infectious diseases at the global level.
  Bringing solutions to these newly encountered problems constitutes a major challenge for the future development of science. Our feeling is that we should take a new approach and pursue creative research extensively based upon scientific perspective and feed back the results to society. To that end, management of research placed in an international perspective, development of human resources and exchanges in the domain of research will become increasingly important elements.
  Based upon these standpoints, we have established the "Bio-Medical Science Association" by calling on researchers throughout Japan, in order to take up medical biology, a scientific field that has been expanding rapidly in recent years, and to allow these results to contribute properly to the domain of health care. The Association has been very active over the last 17 years, bringing together researchers from diverse horizons in Japanese and foreign research institutions, health care facilities, private companies, serving as a place of research exchanges and proactively promoting advanced scientific concepts and technologies in Japan and also in a vast number of developing countries through workshops, seminars, training sessions, technical assistance and other activities.
  The Association is carrying out research jointly with Japanese and foreign academic societies, universities and companies, dispatches lecturers to various research organizations and companies and is also collaborating closely with the WHO and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Moreover since its creation, the Association has been publishing an in-house publication on a regular basis and sponsoring or supporting international symposia and workshops as needed.
  The requests from society toward our Association do not cease to increase day by day. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to become members of our Association in order to contribute to the further development and progress of our activities.
